If I Were You: Dunder Mifflin Part 1

I mean when I tell people I work at Dunder Mifflin, they think that we sell mufflers. Or muffins. Or... mittens. And frankly all those sound better than paper so, I let it slide.

Hi there! Sarah here. I’m going to start breaking up these “If I Were You” posts into more digestible bites and share them via email paired with relevant news and social media tips. It’s a free, weekly eNews, featuring a new fictional client each month. Sign up here if you’re interested! (I won’t be sharing the news or tips here on my blog, only in the email.)

April Spotlight: Dunder Mifflin Paper Company

Dunder Mifflin doesn’t look too exciting on paper. Pun intended. Which is exactly why I selected the people person’s paper people for this month’s fictional client spotlight. They have a humble office in Scranton, Pennsylvania and a decidedly unsexy product. Should they even bother with social media?

Of course they should. As should you. This month, in honor of The Office’s 15th anniversary, I’ll share social media ideas for Michael Scott’s motley crew that any business or brand can repurpose to suit your own audience.

P.S. If you’re not familiar with The Office, it takes 15 hours to binge watch the whole series. Knock yourself out on Netflix, and I’ll be here when you get back!

Dunder Doodles

Let’s start with, arguably, the easiest social media content: user-generated content or UGX. What makes it easy? Other people do it for you! For Dunder Mifflin, I’d recommend this:

  • Launch the #DunderDoodles Instagram campaign!

  • Ask followers to post drawings (on paper, genius I know) featuring a relevant, uplifting, inclusive topic or theme.

  • Instruct them to include the hashtag #DunderDoodles and tag Dunder Mifflin in their posts.

  • Provide a deadline.

  • Create an incentive.

  • Add an Instagram Highlight to your profile to feature entries.

  • Have fun!

Here’s an example of a post introducing the campaign, incorporating all the ideas mentioned above:

Then, throughout the month, you’d post entries to your Feed and your Story, reminding people to share their drawings and using relevant hashtags to get your posts in front of as many eyes as possible.

If you have any questions about launching a similar campaign for your own business or brand, get in touch!
